Telogram – “Strange Letters”
It has been brought to my attention that a company called Telogram has been sending out a variety of “strange letters”.
The one that was brought to my attention was sent to someone’s address but with their mother’s name on. The letter was enquiring about the address of their mum saying and quoting their last known address! She still lives at that address!
The letter then wanted them to phone a number to verify her mum’s personal details. If no action is taken, they then quote as saying they “will be undertaking outbound telephone calls to various sources including neighbours to verify the information supplied is correct.”
Alarm bells certainly did start ringing when I heard this as I thought which company would ring the neighbours to check out your personal details? And how come the neighbours know this kind of information? Very strange!
I then began a search on Google and according to moneysavingexpert.com it is a scam. On further research I uncovered that
Telogram Ltd is a scam company run by Capquest Debt Recovery. Very fond of trying to make people pay debts that aren’t theirs.
This was found at consumeractiongroup.co.uk.
The company is registered with Companies House which the registered address is:
TELOGRAM LIMITED
9 Clarendon Place
LEAMINGTON SPA
CV32 5QP
However, the ‘jury’ is still out on this one as I have found that the number to ring could either be a premium rate number, others have reported that it could be phishing for identity theft and others who think it is legitimate.
I would be interested for anyone with a similar story to share and submit it so we can try and shed some light on this!

I recently came accross your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I dont know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog.

I recived a letter from telogram with all the information above except they listed my address from over 3 years ago that i was living in saying that they have to have my details.
I havent done anything but then had another letter from HL Solicitors to find that the website is a do it your self solicitors scam letters basically.
All a load of ball but they are saying they are going to take legal action??
over 3 years later?? Surely it cant be that hard to find someone no one else has a problem finding me why should they?
If it was a debt i would have known about it along time ago!

Hi Zoe
The jury is still out on this one but it definitely sounds strange. My friend who made me aware of this scam has not heard anything from them recently and if they want you to contact them with details I advise at this point not to and to report it to Consumer Direct. You can find them on my website on ‘How to Report’ page. Keep me informed of any updates on this!

You asked “how did you find my blog?” I have had a Telogram phone call advising me of a supposed telegram and have been directed to voicemail every time, which is most distressing early on, when you believe they do want to pass a message on to you. Having not received that telegram in the post (as normally happens with telegrams), you start to wonder if they do have a message for you. But I did a search on Telogram and your blog came up on the first page – that’s how I got here. Kind regards, AmIGonnaBeScammed

Just stumbled by this site after searching “TELOGRAM”. Had a letter from them today telling me they are holding a message for me, with no reference to debt or what it might be about. I have only lived in property for 2 years and the details are correct for me at this address which is what concerns me most. I have as far as I’m aware a perfect credit history and no arrears or debt, and I’m sure I’d be aware of any unpaid debt to anyone. For this reason I think it must be a scam, and I will be ignoring the letter and I advise anybody else to do the same. Will post back if anything else happens.

I received a ‘Creditor’s Notice’ this morning from CapQuest for a total of £589.58 for an outstanding debt to E.ON (formerly Powergen).
The thing is, I’ve never had an account with Powergen and the misspelling of my name is the exact same misspelling the council used on my Council Tax bills at my previous (rented) address which I left four years ago having settled all bills.
I’m still trying to put the pieces together to figure out how/where this mysterious debt was accrued and fear that the property I once rented fell into arrears in regards its Powergen bills and so CapQuest have contacted the council to ask for the details of the prior resident, i.e. me!
All very fishy and until CapQuest issue tangible threats and provide evidence of my supposed debt I’m not going to deign even to set my solicitors upon them. Bunch of threatening, erroneous cowboys in my estimation.

Hello.I recieved a call from Telogram this morning. The lady had South African accent which I thought odd(I thought telegrams didn’t exist anymore but maybe they’d been started up again in a new format or something). She wouldn’t say what the call was about unless I gave my date of birth. I decided not to give it but confirmed my name then put the phone down abruptly & decided to research the company. Thankyou for the info. But should I now be worried about doorsteppers?

I recieved a letter from telogram this morning saying that they were investigating on behalf of an investments company and that they needed 2 confirm and update my records, it has a previous address that I have not lived in for 4 years now, I have lived in 1 other house which I still own and rent out and iam still on electoral role at as I just haven’t got round to changing to my new address. The letter then states that I must phone a number provided by the 6th of January or my details will then be passed onto their intense investigation department until they find out where I actually live. I also as reading above will be ignoring this letter.. Wonder if the solicitor letter is on it’s way..
Iam finding this really strange as a few weeks ago I had a phone call at 6am on my mobile from someone claiming to be a police officer, didn’t give his name or station, he said my number had been given at the scene of a serious incident, and that he was to chase up my IDENTITY, he wanted me to give my name address date of birth etc, I told him that I wasn’t involved in any serious incident so then it must be a mistake and he insisted that I give my details so that he could clear me from the investigation, I asked what was the incident and where it happened, but couldn’t tell me that information at the time, I then asked his name and station he was calling from, he then made excuses to go and said he would get another officer to phone me later in the day..
I wonder if this is related to recieving this letter.

i have read this all with interest as i too have had a letter from these people ! They also called my elderly neighbour 3 times before christmas to say they had important info for me!!!! Luckily he is very wise and denied all knowledge of me on the basis that telograms (telegrams) no longer exsist . In the letter they state they are working on behalf of the housing assoc i used to rent from!!! (As you guess i have moved!) I have read quite a few things on this company ,mostly on money expert.com and they all say the same thing ! So i will be feeding the letter in my hand to the shredder and go about my business!
Dont worry if i here any more will let you know !
Great site by the way .

lmao… Why do ppl worry so much about debt
just imagine how wonderful the world would be if everyone could take responsibility to not over spend what they can afford… It all comes back to the fact that millions and millions of ppl get handed out credit on the streets and they know they cant afford the instalment… Therefore no matter what they still go ahead and spend the money that belongs to the banks
lmao… This is a true laughing matter… If you know you’re name is clean of debt
then sit back and relax

Hi all, I received a letter addressed to my dad (who stayed with me over xmas) from a DCA for a debt that has been cleared ages ago. I didn’t worry him with it and a week later a letter from Telogram arrived for him telling him he had a message and to call to hear it. I again ignored it. Now a letter from Telogram has arrived addressed “to the occupier” asking me to call them.
Telogram are linked to a Debt Collection agency and fish for details of potential debtors. They contact anyone with similar name / dob to see if they can track down the person with the supposed debt. They use aggressive tactics – the contacting of neighbours is contrary to OFT guidelines. DON’T call them. If you must, put everything in writing (but don’t SIGN or they’ll have your signature). The solicitors, HL Solicitors are all part of the same company. If you have to get into discussion with them ak them to provide PROOF of your debt – it is likely they’ll postpone things.. . good luck

Hi. Have received a letter from TELOGRAM addressed for my sister’s attention, at my address, asking for similar confirmation as to her where abouts (even though they listed her address & she has never lived at mine??) ALARM BELLS indeed!! Transpires they are part of CapQuest Investment Ltd, who ARE a debt recovery agent. The only advise I can give here, is to either email The Office of Fair Trading , contact or email (they love this kind of story & may already have had numerous complaints??).
As for myself, I would challenge them to supply the proof of any debt, as the onus is upon them to prove it, NOT for you to prove it isn’t your debt. The prey upon people not knowing their legal rights, so stand your ground!
Good luck & check your legal rights.

I have received a letter from Telogram that was sent purely by coincidence to a friend of my daughter asking for current address of my son and quoting an address that we moved from 5 years ago.
As my son passed away 8 years ago this letter has upset my wife and I and am proposing to forward a copy to the Office of Fair Trading for their comments.

Hi. I received a call yesterday to my mobile from someone looking for my partner because they were holding some ‘business mail’ for him. They quoted an address I didn’t recognise (we’ve been together over 7 years) and asked if it was his current address. The phone number they called from was (020) 8495 8642, which I have traced to this dodgy TELOGRAM company using the net. Neither of us has any debt, but my partner has an uncommon name (which they knew) and did live at the address they gave before meeting me (8yrs ago). He never ran up any debts there or anywhere else though. How the hell did these people get MY mobile number? is this legal?

Hi all just thought i’d let you know that i’ve just received another letter for my daughter, this time from HL Legal saying that since telogram didn’t get a response they had passed her details on to them. She has to contact them by 23March or further action will be taken with the possibility of a visit to my address to confirm the details they already have. I would appreciate any advice anyone could give me as to where I go from here.
Sarah said this on March 12, 2009 at 1:10 pm
Hi thanks for your comments Sarah. I understand that you are very concerned with this but one point that stands out for me is why would they visit your house to confirm your details?! I have never known a debt collection company or any other type of company to do this. It may be of interest to look at this link regarding the connection of HL Legal and telogram.
Any further questions or comments please feel free to add them here and if anyone else can help Sarah please leave comments!!

This also says they may send someone to visit the address for verification of who i am. I have some friends in the police so i may just ask their advice too, but any from you will be gratefully recieved.

A friend of mine has received a letter from telogram and HL Legal as above. Guess what H L’s address is the same as Capquest – what a coincident.
Also on a search revealed Telogram is a dormant company with a nil credit rating.

From there I came to your page. I found it very interesting and am now wondering why such people would be ringing me. I’ve lived at this address over 30 years, have never incurred any debts and do not give out my personal details.

I had a call from Telogram today, however they asked for me using my maiden name (not been called that for years) and at an address that isnt even mine, i have never had a credit card, never been in debt in my life and dont have a land line so i have no idea how they got my grandparents number. Although the address they asked to confirm wasn’t mine. I hope they dont keep calling and harrassing my grandparents for the wrong person, i will seek legal advice if they do. From what i have read about them today, they dont seem to bothered about getting the right person before they threaten to send people to your door.

I’ve moved out of my flat for a month now and i went back to collect some old letters. surprised i received a letter addressed to my father, who has never lived at that address. His name has only ever been used at this particular address for househunting, and sending potential properties to my old flat. reading all the other comments and the confused identies with old/misspelled names and long abandoned addresses i can only assume that contact details have been dug up or sold to these people.
The company itself is very suspicious, the date of the two letters, one from telogram and one from HL Legal are probably a little close to each other (18th and 20th).the font and size for the dates are the same, as are their opening hours.
This company is much to suspicious to worry me at the present time. its been a month since these letters and they have not yet contacted me again. so unless they have grounds for what they claim we owe them and come to chase us up, we won’t be worrying about this any longer. Thanks for posting this!

They said they were a holding company and had something to send to me but couldnt send it without me telling them what they wanted, they then asked about my mother and what address she now lives? I thought it was all very strange and the guy didnt sound very proffesionall so didnt tell him anything. He finished the call by saying he had to do some more research and get back to me? Am I being paranoid or do I smell a scam?

AND HAS ANYBODY GET VISIT TO THE HOUSE FROM THESE PEOPLE OR ARE THEY JUST SAYING THAT IN THEIR LETTERS TO SCARE US ??? Why are they actually sending these letters if any of you actually doesnt say that they took any more legal action? Many thanks for your responses

I think this may be connected to Buchannan Clarke & Wells who contacted me by telephone in order to find my current address which I refused to give. They buy old written off debts which were nearly all highly disputed or raised in error. Mine is in respect of Orange and a non existent broadband supply some years ago at an old address. I think the H L Legal letter I received today is connected to this.
As a retired accountant, I am reminded of the advice I was given to spell my client names properly and state the numbers accurately, neither of which H L Legal did. They managed to refer to their client as both Telogram Limited and Teleogram Limited.
Al these organisations including Capquest Debt Recovery Ltd, Sampson & Co operate under the flimsiest level of legality.

I had a call from Telogram today, (01252 576371) “we have a letter with 2 addresses – which one shall we send it to!!” – But wouldn’t disclose who it is from or what it’s about until I’d run “data protection” – i.e. AKA give us some personal details to use for goodness know what!!
I am guessing this relates to a recent letter I received demanding £5K – that I allegedly owe a bank from seven years ago, and the bank had ’sold them’ the debt. Not sure I owe this at all, but anyway, this debt would be statute Barred as far as I know, any way. Details: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/ihtmanual/IHTM28384.htm

I received the same thing today so i have been on various websites saying what to do if you get one and on most of the websites give sound advice. If you phone their number they have your phone number forever and wont stop pestering you so dont ring them (+ it will cost you to ring).
If you need to contact them and ask for proof of agreement (debt) Send them a letter do it via recorded delivery (as proof) and at then end of the letter when you write Yours Faithfully etc ” UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SIGN THE LETTER” if you do They then have your signature and they then can forge an agreement which it will be virtually imposs iblefor you prove that you didnt sigh anything.

It says “we are corresponding with you as the authorised agebt for CapQuest Investments LTD who have requested that we make the necessary enquiries to establish the current address of Mrs *** ******. Our client has an obligation to update their file with data concerning change of address..etc etc.
I looked them up and so glad I did as this is what I found.

I have received a Telogram letter today with my address on it, but to a rented occupant’s name from over 10 years ago. I bought the house seven years ago and have received letters to this previous occupant for many past debts, which I have always ignored. Never telephone these companies, as they will always harass you. Never respond to their letters, as they will then treat you as the person they are after and harass you. If anyone calls at the door, take your telephone and dial the police while they are there in front of you. If they show you ID, call the police anyway because there is no legitimate way you can verify their details except with their own company who could very well be bogus. Never pay anything to these companies because they will always come back for more under some guise of outstanding administration fees etc. Never give them your name, as they will use it to raise bogus payments to your address and now your name also. Never sign anything, again they can use that to raise bogus claims against you. If your telephone says ‘Number Withheld’ don’t answer it. If you get ‘Number Out Of Area’ don’t answer it. Simply put, ignore the letters, and ignore any other attempt to communicate with you. Thanks to Scamwarning for creating this blog.

Further to my article i posted on the 15th October. i have had more developments.
In the last Two days i have received more letters etc and they are getting worse (threatening). So i thought i would take the advice of some information on other websites etc…
1. I went to my local police station and reported that there could be a scam going on in the area and to make them aware, the police gave me a reference number for future contact. So if they turn up at your door. get id off the caller and while they are there phone the police.
2. The letters i got one was supposed to be from a major bank and the debt was from 20 years ago so i called into the bank. hopeing and thinking they would help. The bank phoned them and immediately Capquest,H L Legal or Telogram (same company) said they cannot talk to the cashier and needed to speak to me direct, The cashier basically gave me the phone and my reply was under no circumstances am i talking to H L Legal etc. I also found out that if anyone has a debt outstanding with a bank etc they can sell the debt and that includes all your personal details to a collection agency. how is this legal? When we have been told to Shread every piece of paper with our personal details on or it could lead to someone forging your documents etc, But the banks are allowed to sell your details on? surely they are breaking some sort of law! So dont go to your bank!
3. Then i tried to get some advice off a Solicitor firm and in my cheeky free 10 min appointment and found out Solicitor firms are not interested because legal aid will not cover such cases like these + they think things are genuine too!
4. So i thought no one could or was willing to help me so i started getting worried. All the websites giving me knowledge of what to do but nobody in the profession seems interested or knows what to do (legally i mean) Anyway i was driving into my local town and i spotted a sign to CAB (Citizens Advise Bureau) and thought it was a long shot. So i went in and would you believe it! On talking to the Volunteer everything the website mensioned or advised me to do the Volunteer new and i was so relieved and instead of me having to deal with H L Legal etc they are acting on my behalf (what a weight off my shoulders)and first thing the Volunteer said was he will write to H L Legal for proof and if there is no proof we want it in writing. SO if you are stuck please go to CAB

How are these people being allowed to continue with this farce. I had a letter today addressed to somebody that we have never heard of claiming its intent was to verify that this person lived at our address it was from Telogram hence my immediate discovery of this informative blog. The alleged registered office is at 100 Barbirolli Square Manchester M2 3AB and appears very credible

I have also received a letter this morning from Telogram saying they are trying to establish the current resisdential address of Mr * * *****. For a a start I’m a Ms and not Mr, and the last known address they have, Ive never even heard of!!! After stumbling across this blog, I realise it’s a scam and shan’t worry about it. But there are many vunerable people who will fall for this and I wish something can be done to prevent this and if so how?

I have today received a letter from TELOGRAM saying they are acting on behalf of CapQuest Investments. They are telling me to contact them on an 0870 number to confirm my previous address of 15 years ago! When I googled CapQuest they are a debt collection agency but I cannot recall leaving that address with any debt and if I had of surely by now it is no longer valid?
This is scary!

I received a letter today from TELOGRAM also saying they are acting on behalf of CapQuest Investments. Requesting i contact their 0870 number to confirm my old address from 18 years ago. They used very suggestive language in the letter to suggest if i dont contact them I would be INVESTIGATED further by AGENCIES of the dark side of the system
. It’s basically a scare tactic.
Having researched into CapQuest Investments they are an aggresive Debt Collection agency who are fond of hounding the public into paying debts that are either over 6yrs old ( so are Statute Barred – ie you dont have to pay them anymore ) or dont even belong to you.
They buy up old debt lists for pennies then chase up those debts regardless of them being owed by you, having been settled in the past, or even having any legal status.
They work on the premise that they can use aggressive tactics to force you into paying a debt you probably no longer owe or ever owed, knowing that a certain percentage of people will just pay up.
BEWARE, This is a Scam – DO NOT CONTACT THEM – KNOW YOUR RIGHTS.
They have to prove you owe anything and that the debt belongs to you. If its over 6yrs old you dont have to pay anyway. Do not pay them a penny under any circumstance, once you do that you acknowledge the debt. Seek proffesional advice first if you think you may owe anything.

I too got a letter from Telogram. It for someone with the same surname as me but a different initial. I did contact them and said that the letter could not be for me. I was then told that two furter letters might arrive and to ignore them. I wish I had gone to this web site first. However I will contact trading standards and be aware of the tactics of this firm.
